How to Equip a Corporate Fitness Club Without Losing Money: Checklist & Lessons Learned
OAO "RZD" (Russian Railways) — the country's largest rail operator — partnered with systems integrator MediaSett to build "Fitness Depo," a network of multimedia corporate fitness clubs for employees. SpinetiX media players power every screen, creating immersive training environments where digital signage isn't decoration — it's the core experience.
Fitness Depo — corporate gym with synchronized multimedia zones powered by SpinetiX
Why Corporate Fitness?
Employees who exercise are more productive, take fewer sick days, and stay loyal longer. Research shows that candidates prefer companies offering corporate fitness facilities. RZD recognized this and invested in two premium multimedia fitness centers — but the challenge was making them genuinely impressive, not just functional.
From Brief to Reality
The project required transforming standard gym spaces into immersive multimedia environments. Key requirements:
- ① Synchronized video walls — large-format displays in cardio zones playing coordinated content across multiple screens
- ② Zone-specific content — different content for cardio, strength training, group classes, and reception areas
- ③ Audio-video synchronization — music and visuals coordinated to create the right atmosphere per zone
- ④ Centralized management — one system managing both locations from a single Elementi workstation
- ⑤ Award-worthy design — the spaces needed to compete in international architectural competitions
Equipment Checklist: Two Fitness Centers
The complete equipment list deployed across both Fitness Depo locations:
Media Players
- ▸ SpinetiX HMP400 players for all zones
- ▸ Elementi content management
Displays
- ▸ Large-format video walls (cardio zone)
- ▸ Individual screens (strength training)
- ▸ Reception and lobby displays
5 Recommendations for Integrators
Based on the Fitness Depo project, systems integrator MediaSett shared five lessons for anyone deploying multimedia in fitness environments:
Gym environments generate humidity and high temperatures. Choose displays and enclosures rated for these conditions — standard consumer TVs will fail within months.
Generic TV or news feeds are counterproductive. Use content designed for fitness environments — dynamic visuals, countdown timers, heart rate zone guides, class schedules.
Cardio zones need high-energy playlists; yoga rooms need calm. Ensure audio zones are acoustically separated and independently controllable.
SpinetiX players don't need a central server — each player runs autonomously. This eliminates single points of failure and reduces IT infrastructure costs to near zero.
If the first location succeeds, the client will want to replicate it. Design the content and architecture for easy cloning to additional sites.
Results
- International Design Award Fitness Depo was nominated for the Golden Trezzini Award — an international architectural and design competition — recognizing the quality of the multimedia fitness environment.
- Employee Engagement The immersive fitness environments increased employee gym attendance — the multimedia experience made the facilities a recruitment differentiator for RZD.
- Scalable Template The architecture, content, and design were developed as a replicable template — allowing RZD to deploy identical experiences in additional locations without starting from scratch.
